the game got played
on heart-gazing nights

dreaming this body transposed
among las estrellas otras

this cypress,
my six year
swaying neighbor,
doesn’t know our inventions
for its genus
or clade,
but the root graze
of the cypress beside it
names both.

what if this time you look?

what if this time when the pitch of night air
bends and its presence rings in your waking ears,

burn, familia.

burn so bright their spit sizzles, lost to vapor before it ever runs down our cheeks. may we peel paint at the touch of our blessed palms, blister the hoods of idling patrol cars now and ever, amen.

“our students paid for the campus experience”

august on its back
breathing smoke,
daydreaming
calendar’s end,

when words tumble earthworm / my mouth aspill/

loose soil / lost between open fingers /

i stutter along the writhe-recede /

delivered / unto dwelling /

only wanting to be known:
